Festival of Birds | Ontario

Point Pelee National Park

Each spring, "birders" are invited to observe the avian migratory phenomena from Canada's southernmost mainland by the Friends of Point Pelee and Point Pelee National Park. At Point Pelee, 42 of the 52 regularly occurring North American warblers have been sighted. These colourful songbirds sing loudly in the woods because they are in full breeding plumage. The festival offers a variety of activities for both experienced and inexperienced birders, including birding treks, lunch & learn seminars, the 100 Species Challenge, and more.
For the Festival of Birds at the beginning of May each year, nearly 40,000 people travel to Point Pelee National Park. Every year, over 300 bird species pass through the park on their migratory routes, giving park visitors up-close views of birds they won't see anywhere else in the nation.

100 Species Challenge

Complete the 100 Species Challenge throughout the Festival to get a commemorative pin depicting a Least Bittern! Go outside and begin crossing things off your list. The criteria are straightforward: tally the different bird species you see while you're there. It is necessary to watch birds in the Point Pelee Birding Area. Visual or aural identification of species is possible. Everyone who participates must adhere to good birding ethics.

Attending this Challenge, you will have some extra fun other than the excellent birding experience you will have there. You might know that Point Pelee National Park is one of the bird-watching hidden gems in Ontario, attracting many birders annually. Plan a trip, book in advance, and have a great time at the park!

Before Attending Festival of Birds

There are some tips you'd better know before attending the festival. No food or drink will be permitted inside the visitor center, but there are plenty of alfresco dining options nearby, including more picnic tables and a bigger birding information tent. The Friends of Point Pelee will provide a birder breakfast behind the Visitor Center. Think about going to a nearby restaurant or packing your own lunch for the day. Just make sure to put everything out when you leave!
If you know the rules and the policies you'd experience a more comfortable and enjoyable Festival. Don't forget to take picture and send for us to share with others. This way you can visually introduce the joy any one can have during the Festival of Birds at the Point Pelee National Park.
