Springsong: A Celebration of Birds, Ontario

Mother's Day weekend is traditionally the time for the Springsong Weekend. This weekend is a time for appreciation of both literature and birds. With the assistance of Margaret Atwood and the Pelee Island Bird Observatory, this event was organized twelve years ago as a fundraiser for The Heritage Centre. The prized Botham Cup is up for grabs in a 24-hour green "bird race." Award-winning writers are brought to our island by Margaret Atwood, who then introduces them at our yearly sold-out banquet.

Why Pelee Island for Springsong Festival?

There are aspects of Pelee Island that attract ecotourists. The Atlantic Flyway and the Mississippi Flyway pass right through Pelee, the southernmost populated region of Canada, which is also a critical migratory birds crossing point. BirdLife International's Canadian partners, the Canadian Nature Federation (CNF) and Bird Studies Canada (BSC), have recognized the island as a worldwide Important Bird Area (IBA). IBAs are " remarkable locations of significance on a national or worldwide scale, as well as places that are especially vital for birds."

What We Can Do During Springsong on Pelee Island

The annual Springsong Weekend, which usually happens on Mother's Day weekend, is a way for Pelee to commemorate the migrating birds' return each year. For ground feeders like these, which dig about in search of delectable scraps, sprinkle seed is a good idea. The White-throats arrive first, followed by the White-crowns, but they can also be seen together, particularly in the first part of May. The island's Bird Observatory works to preserve and research the bird population while also giving visitors a chance to participate in tracking, tagging, and photographing the many different species that live there.
