The Cackling Goose resembles a smaller variant of the common Canada Goose; the two were originally considered to be one species. Although their plumage is nearly identical, Cackling Geese are more delicate, with stubbier bills, steeper foreheads, shorter necks (which are startlingly obvious in flying birds), and often more rounder heads. The pitch of their calls is higher than a Canada Goose's. Like its bigger relatives, Cackling Geese feed in huge groups, frequently mingling with other geese species, in marshes and fields.

Cackling Goose ID
For most people, winter and migration are the best times to seek cackling geese because they nest in isolated areas of northern Canada and Alaska. During these seasons, they can be highly prevalent in the Pacific Northwest, California's Central Valley, the southern Great Plains, and the Texas/Louisiana coast. Remember that Canada Geese frequently draw their necks while resting, making them appear tiny while you carefully scan the flock for a small, short-necked bird with a short beak.
