Common Shelduck

The common shelduck is a species of waterfowl in the shelduck genus Tadorna. It is abundant and widely distributed throughout the Euro-Siberian region of the Palearctic, mainly breeding in temperate and subtropical areas; in the winter, it is also found in the Maghreb. It is a peculiar, giant, somewhat goose-like duck that inhabits tidal mudflats, grassy fields nearby, and coastal wetlands. Often, the striking plumage appears to be only black and white; up close, the head is a rich glossy green, and the broad breast band is a dark rust colour. The juvenile was duller overall, with a white face and eyering, and a male with an elevated knob at the base of a red bill. It is less frequent and more local inland in lakes and along rivers. Frequently spotted grazing and strolling, occasionally in groups.

Common Shelduck ID

The common shelduck resembles a little short-necked goose in terms of size and form. It is a stunning bird with a dark green head and neck, a reddish-pink beak, pink feet, a white body with chestnut spots, and a black belly. The major remiges are black, the secondary remiges are green (only visible in flight), and the covers of the wings are white. Almost all of the underwings are white. The sexes are similar, but the male is more vividly coloured during the breeding season, with a brilliant red beak and a conspicuous knob on the forehead. The female is smaller and has some white facial markings.
