Northern Siberia is home to the tundra bean goose, which breeds there. Other authors classify this and the taiga bean goose as a single species, while the American Ornithological Society and the International Ornithologists' Union recognize them as distinct species (collectively called bean goose). It migrates and spends the winters in Asia's southern regions. There has been a significant amount of gene flow since the taiga and tundra bean geese separated around 2.5 million years ago and had secondary contact around 60,000 years ago.
